Brush Lettering : Modern Calligraphy

Using a brush and ink to create lettering feels authentic, gentle and traditional. The feel of the brush on the page is relaxing and when you get in a rhythm, it almost feels like meditating. Because you're concentrating so much on the lines and letters, you don’t think about anything else and this makes it feel really calming. It’s been shown that creativity boosts dopamine in the body and creates a natural anti-depressant effect. Which roughly translated, means it makes you happy.

Brush lettering, also sometimes referred to as modern calligraphy, celebrates imperfection. Letters don’t have to be all the same size or to adhere to certain lines on a page. There is nothing regimented about it. And brush lettering looks really lovely with other mediums, such as watercolours and gouache paints so it’s a beautiful thing to add to your own pieces of art.

This is a simple little site that will help you to get started.

When I started brush lettering, or modern calligraphy, most of the sites I found talked about using various pens for lettering. I tried a few of them but for me, nothing beats a brush and ink.
